The State of the Nation's Housing Report was founded 30 years ago with the goal
of trying to raise awareness and understanding of housing issues at a
time when it felt like these issues were becoming more important, and yet, not
getting the public attention they deserved. Over those 30 years, that
question about how do we get public attention to housing issues is not as
much of a challenge anymore. And the big part of that is because of the fact that
we had the housing crash and the Great Recession. And the importance of housing,
not only for individuals but for the overall economy, means that housing is
front and center. That's the good news. The bad news is that the challenges we
face as a country have not really changed much, in fact, in many ways have
    only gotten worse.
The primary message coming out of this year's report is, in many respects, not
different than it's been in the past, which is that housing is increasingly
expensive relative to what people have to spend, and it's creating financial
stress on people and forcing them into choices about where to live that are
    less than optimal
