(CG) NOW AT 6 ---- AN APPARENT SHARK SIGHTING ---- AT A POPULAR LOCAL BEACH. THE D-E-M SAYS A SWIMMER AT SALTY BRINE STATE BEACH SAW A FIN ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON - AND ALERTED LIFEGUARDS. (MM) THE SIGHTING PROMPTED OFFICIALS TO PUT -----TEMPORARY SWIMMING RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER KIM KALUNIAN SPOKE WITH DEM OFFICIALS AND A BOATER ------WHO SAYS HE ALSO SAW A SHARK - SHE JOINS US IN STUDIO WITH THE DETAILS-- NEW AT SIX (KK) MIKE, CAROLINE - THOSE SWIMMING RESTRICTIONS HAVE BEEN LIFTED AND ALL WAS BACK TO NORMAL WHEN WE VISITED SALTY BRINE EARLIER TODAY - BUT THE DEM SAYS THEY TAKE THESE KINDS OF REPORTS SERIOUSLY AND ARE WORKING TO MONITOR SHARKS MORE CLOSELY. We fished until about noon and one the way back in we seen a big shark. COY GRUBB WAS VISITING FROM KNOXVILLE TO FISH WITH HIS SON WHEN HE SAW THIS - It was just a big fin in the water we thought it was dolphins at first until they started circling the boat. GRUBB WAS ABOUT 40 MILES OFF SHORE WHEN HE SAW THE FIN THURSDAY - A SIMILAR SIGHT APPEARED IN THE WATERS OFF SALTY BRINE STATE BEACH THE DAY BEFORE - PROMPTING OFFICIALS TO RESTRICT BEACH-GOERS TO WAIST-DEEP SWIMMING. NO ONE WAS HURT. It's pretty dangerous. I mean I don't know much about this area but I woudn't like to be in the water with sharks. We need to build a monitoring system to better protect people and that's what we're doing. THE DEM'S MICHAEL HEALEY SAYS THEY'RE PLANNING TO BEGIN TAGGING AND TRACKING SHARKS IN THE WATERS OFF RHODE ISLAND - TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF BEACHGOERS AND TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SHARKS' MIGRATORY PATTERNS. We're all using the same ocean we need to be vigilant and we need to respond certainly to these shark sightings but this is kind of a fact of life. (KK) AND IF YOU SPOT A FIN OR SHARK AT THE BEACH YOU'RE URGED TO GET OUT OF THE WATER AND IMMEDIATELY ALERT A LIFE GUARD - THE DEM SAYS ITS THEIR PRIORITY TO ENSURE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE, FUN TIME AT THE BEACH THIS SUMMER. KK EWN.
