This ancient doorway once marked the border between Capri and Anacapri. The name, Door of Difference (Porta della Differenzia), comes from the centuries long rivalry between Capri and Anacapri. The Scala Fencia is composed of 921 steps, with a total length of 1.7 km. The steps were originally thought to have been built by the Phoenicians but now they are believed to have been built by the ancient Greeks. Before the construction of the VIa Provinciale in 1874, the steps were the only link between the two town This tiny chapel was built in the 17th century by Anacapri fisherman who would stop here to pray before embarking on a journey. For thousands of years, the women of Anacapri would have to walk these steps every day to collect fresh water from the spring on the other side of the island. All building materials and food also had to be carried up these steps since Anacapri has no port or beach.
